A few years ago, artificial intelligence seemed like something mainly discussed by technology companies, researchers and IT professionals.

That has changed.

Today, AI can help an office administrator prepare a letter, a manager summarize a lengthy document, a salesperson develop a presentation, an entrepreneur research a business idea, a student understand a difficult topic, or a job seeker organize information more effectively.

You do not need to become a programmer or an AI specialist to benefit from these capabilities.

Do You Need an IT Background to Start Learning AI?

No.

There is an important difference between developing artificial intelligence and using artificial intelligence effectively.

You do not need to understand programming, machine-learning algorithms or advanced mathematics before learning how to use today’s AI tools for everyday work.

Just as you do not need to understand how a smartphone is engineered before using one effectively, you can begin by learning what AI tools can do, how to communicate with them, how to evaluate their answers and how to use them responsibly.

Is Using ChatGPT the Same as Understanding AI?

Not necessarily. Opening an AI tool and typing a question is easy.

Knowing what to ask, how to ask it, how to improve the response, how to verify information, what information should not be shared, which AI tool may be appropriate for a particular task, and when human judgement must override AI requires greater understanding.

AI is also much bigger than ChatGPT. Today’s AI ecosystem includes tools for writing, research, document analysis, presentations, images, productivity, information organization and many other activities.

Even If You Don’t Use AI, AI Can Still Affect You

AI can make digital content increasingly convincing. Messages, posters, profiles, images, videos and other online material may not always be what they appear to be.

That makes AI literacy useful not only for productivity, but also for digital awareness. Learning to question suspicious content, verify information and exercise good judgement is becoming increasingly important.

The Best Way to Understand AI Is to See It in Action

Reading about AI is useful. Seeing what it can do can make the possibilities much easier to understand. Sometimes, seeing a few practical demonstrations is enough to change the way you think about AI and how it could fit into your own work.

That is why Canadian College for Higher Studies is conducting a FREE “AI Made Simple” information session for people from different educational and professional backgrounds.

No technical background is required. The session is intended to explain AI in simple language and demonstrate practical ways AI tools can support everyday work.

Come with curiosity. See what AI can do. Ask questions. Decide for yourself how it may be useful to you.

Where Do You Go After the Free Session?

That depends on you.

Some participants may simply want to become more confident using AI in their current work. Others may discover that structured training in Prompt Engineering and Generative AI for office and professional work could be useful.

Someone already working in IT, cybersecurity, data analytics, marketing, business or another specialized field may need a completely different learning pathway.

There is no single AI learning path that is right for everyone.

At the end of the free session, participants can discuss their education, experience, interests and career goals to explore suitable next steps. Those interested in further training can also learn about applicable funding and payment options, including government-funded, employer-supported, financing and self-funded options, subject to eligibility.
