Testing for COVID-19

The Government of Ontario has recently updated the parameters for COVID-19 testing.

1. You are showing COVID-19 symptoms; Some of the more commonly reported symptoms include:

  • new or worsening cough
  • shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • temperature equal to or over 38°C
  • feeling feverish
  • chills
  • fatigue or weakness
  • muscle or body aches
  • new loss of smell or taste
  • headache
  • gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting)
  • feeling very unwell

2. Have been exposed to a confirmed case of the virus, as informed by a public health unit or exposure notification through the COVID Alert app. If you do not have the app, download it here: https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/coronavirus-disease-covid-19/covid-alert.html

3. Are a resident or working in a setting that has a COVID-19 outbreak, as identified, and informed by a public health unit, and

4. You are eligible for testing as part of a targeted testing initiative directed by the Ministry of Health or the Ministry of Long-Term care.

If you suspect you are ill with COVID-19 or have been exposed to COVID-19 follow:

 

  1. Contact the school/childcare to let them know about this result
  2. You should isolate (stay home) for 14 days and not leave except to get tested or for a medical emergency
  3. Talk with a doctor/health care provider to get advice or an assessment, including if you need a COVID-19 test
  4. Download the COVID Alert mobile app! Protect yourself and your community. Get a phone alert if you have been exposed to COVID-19 and let others know if you test positive, without sharing any personal information.
