COVID-19 is an illness caused by a coronavirus, which is part of a large family of viruses that are known to cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). They are found worldwide in humans and animals.
According to the World Health Organization, a pandemic is declared when a new disease for which people do not have immunity spreads around the world beyond expectations.
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and a dry cough. Some people may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, or diarrhea. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Some people become infected but do not develop any signs or feel unwell. Most people (about 80 percent) recover from the disease without needing special treatment. Approximately one out of every six people who get COVID-19 becomes seriously ill and develops difficulty breathing. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems and compromised immune systems, are more likely to develop severe illness. People with fever, cough and difficulty breathing should seek medical attention.
If you think you have COVID-19 symptoms or have been in close contact with someone who has it, use the Government of Ontario’s online self-assessment to determine if you need to seek further care.

CCHS has taken the following steps to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus:
· We are delivering academic programs online. Once authorized, we will be offering programs in a hybrid format. Most programs online excluded virtual in-person labs in a controlled environment.
· Limiting access to campus to essential service providers and those on campus for mandatory in-person labs and courses
· We are increasing our cleaning protocols, including making alcohol-based hand sanitizer widely available. We use special sanitizing equipment throughout the night and disinfectants to clean surfaces, cleaning high-touch areas hourly.
· Having continuously updated COVID-19 information readily available to our students and staff.
· Communicating through various channels the proper hygiene techniques to take always.
Here are the steps you can take to reduce the risk of infection:
If you are on campus and start to feel ill or experience symptoms of COVID-19, please notify Student Service and leave campus immediately. If emergency, on-campus medical support is required, please visit our Customer Serves Representative in the front desk. She will assist you with the correct protocol.
After leaving campus, go immediately to a provincial COVID-19 assessment Center and get tested.
If you take a COVID-19 test, we ask that you provide Canadian College for Higher Studies the results at [email protected]
CCHS will continue to work closely with local public health units and will follow their guidance about personal health information collected from students and employees. This information is also critical for focusing CCHS’s enhanced cleaning and disinfecting activities and contact tracing.
